But I think that story undercuts the relationship he also had with WCZ.#Yall ever think about how JC and WWX parallel their fathers? How Wei Changze also left the Jiang Leader's side? I do.#Unlike JC though It is far more hilarious and plausible to imagine JFM begging to be CSSR and WCZ's third. You know he would.#My wild headcanon is that JFM and YZY are in a mlm and wlw arranged marriage situation. Deeply unhappy as partners. Better as friends.#they care for each other and I'll admit that there is a beautiful tragedy in them having romantic feelings for each other the whole time.#But I am also here for the gaffs. I'm sorry but the irony of Nico calling Max unprofessional is sending me so bad like sir there's an entire garage full of people, who were literally in the trenches trying to survive the Brocedes fallout while just doing their jobs, who might have a few things to say about your (& Lewis') level of professionalism at that time 😭✋️

Stanford never became friends with Fiddleford.

Instead he got himself a different small friend group who cares a lot about him. At least about the Ford he pretended to be in college.

A kind, soft spoken formerly bullied genius who researches very dull stuff in Oregon and definitely not anything weird. Their Ford would never break any rules or ignore safety measures [unlike that other student they heard about during their college years.]

And then Ford stops answering their calls and loses his grant.

It’s time for an intervention and they start pestering Ford with letters and calls until he finally agrees to meet them at a science convention, but he’ll take his brother with him.

They’re relieved! Ford is with Shermie! They like Shermie! It's a good thing that Ford still has one brother who isn't a good for nothing selfish criminal who destroyed his entire future!

If they ever get their hands on Ford’s evil twin they’ll make sure he’ll regret ever messing with their friend. Ford is too nice for revenge. They aren’t.

Meanwhile at the not-yet Mystery Shack, the Stans freshly survived their own angsty canon divergent tale of two stans AU and locked Bill out of Ford's mind like a week ago.

Stan: I don’t know how long Ford will keep me around but this will be good for him. He needs some friends to take care of him after I inevitably get kicked out again!

Ford: I only agreed to this because Stan insisted and I still haven’t found a way to thank him and apologize. I hope all my “friends” die in a fire.

Also #Ford: uses slang and bad grammar Stan: SHIT WHO DID FORD GET POSSESSED BY NOW???#Eventually an anamoly or a science experiment gone wrong happens during the convention and Ford is all over it immediately #pulls out a new journal #spouts out theories faster than anyone can keep up with and runs closer to the madness with no regard to his #or everyone elses safety Fords friends stare after him disbelieving and scared out of their minds Stan next to them sighs “Ford #amirite?#Welp better go and make sure he doesn’t get himself killed” and runs after Ford.#Eventtually in all the chaos Ford and Stan get rescued by a kind man in a giant mech dinosaur. Ford and the new guy hit it off immediately #and solve everything with just a little bit more destuction that might’ve been necessary. It was all for the sake of science.#Stan takes a long look at the robot guy. “Yep #he’ll do. Seems much more Ford’s style”#and throws him into the Stanleymobile together with Ford and escapes before the police arrive.#Ford and the new guy barely notice as they keep on talking nerd stuff. Easiest kidnapping of Stans life.#He knew coming here was a great idea. And thus the mystery trio was born.

#alek art #zane julien #previous master of ice #ninjago #lego ninjago #2024 #aka the scene i wish we got in snake jaguar ...#zane is like 30 here #im mostly thinking about dr juliens perspective on this night. we have very little to go off of but he was very weirded out #random very sick old man shows up at your door and takes an “interest” in your son. he isnt even over for an entire day. with him comes col #he was striken with winter and something about him felt off. he leaves without a word. after his arrival your son begins acting weird.#then another old man arrives. asking for your son. wonder what happened there #for anything about passing on powers or losing them its always some big event... hm #i think the previous master really did need shetler. we know he was old and died shortly after the power giving. i dont know what about #zane caught his eye. i do think its very interesting that this man of few words was so obviously fascinated that dr julien noticed.#dr julien isnt the most socially aware and in the little bit he said about the previous master... he sounded concerned #imagine weirding out the weirdest man alive #i think zane caught on too. he felt eyes on him the entire night. they ate dinner with the man.. gave him shelter... but he felt he wanted #more. sometime that day he gave zane the power of ice. which effectively changed the course of his entire life. zane and dr julien hadnt a #clue what happened. 'yesterday a man arrived' so not even within a day did he see zane and decide that he was the one #thinking about how zane acting like his self now is 'strange' and was out of the ordinary. what was he like before? how do you even pass a #power down. we see people get their powers stolen and its always a spectacle and its so exhausting and so on. how did dr julien not see #anything. there was no questions? he just noticed the previous master found his son interesting and then he left ?#goddddd im insane i wanna write a fic about zane pre series

Thinking a lot of thoughts about Hornblower's relationships with Barbara and Maria as a metaphor for his larger relationship to social mobility and ambition, and I think there's actually a lot there - not sure if it was intentional, but I do think that whether intentionally or inadvertently, Forester did an interesting job with the parallels.

Quick note beforehand that some of this is based on my constant brief paging through C. Northcote Parkinson's Hornblower "biography", which, while I absolutely abhor his interpretation of Hornblower, gives even more food for thought on this point. I'm also leaning more into his interpretation of Hornblower's background and childhood, as opposed to the TV show's, so it might not work if you're coming from the TV show's perspective.

Parkinson takes Forester's comment that Hornblower was a "doctor's son" to mean that he was the son of an apothecary, rather than a physician like in the show. I'm not a historian of the period, so I would be hard-pressed to actually try to fit Hornblower's father within the 18th-century framework of medical practice, but either way, given his awkwardness around upper-class life and that he seems to have grown up in rural Kent, I think that Parkinson's claim that he was the son of an apothecary, rather than a physician, does have some reasonable foundation, or is at least equally plausible (to me) as the show's.

Hornblower struggles with poverty through most of the series, especially the first half, but even when he is barely scraping by, such as at the start of Lieutenant, this does not seem to be an abnormal state; and when he finally arrives at wealth and success, he constantly wishes to go back to the days when he was a penniless lieutenant, so from this we might also surmise that he did not come from wealth. (I'm also comparing especially to Jack Aubrey, who, while he admittedly makes a hash of coming into large amounts of money, and who also lives perfectly happily on very little, is clearly quite comfortable being the "lord of the manor" by comparison.)

One of the biggest changes in the second half of the series (from The Happy Return/Beat to Quarters onward) is that Hornblower's career comes into fruition; he becomes a decorated Captain, a member of the landed gentry, a Knight of Bath, a Peer, and finally an admiral, and marries into an enormously influential family. He's constantly in conflict about this, until he isn't: he wants to become someone powerful and important, except that he doesn't like the role once he gets it, and constantly wishes about the old days, then feels guilty for wishing for them. Most importantly, he seems to become less and less himself, his mental narrative getting more and more distorted as he tries to mold himself into the person he thinks he wants to be.

I don't think this is a particular novel interpretation, but I think that in light of this, the contrast between his marriage to Maria and his marriage to Barbara is very interesting. If he was an apothecary's son, his and Maria's marriage would make a decent amount of sense - they'd be from similar social backgrounds, and probably a reasonable match, if Hornblower's career had continued as expected. Hornblower feels comfortable around Maria at the start of their friendship and the very beginning of their marriage in a way that mirrors his comfort with the life he's living at that point - which is to say that he clearly knows and understands what's expected of him and how to interact, in clear contrast with later books. But on the other hand, for all that he originally does love Maria, Hornblower comes to find her to be coarse, unrefined, and boring, and feel that she is not good enough for the person he wants to become. It's at the point when he starts to feel that he's moved passed Maria that he begins to take on his new, ambitious, performative persona.

On the other hand, Hornblower feels stiff and uncomfortable around Barbara from the beginning of their relationship, notably for reasons of class, and even in later books, consistently sounds intimidated by her poise and upper-class untouchability. With Maria he doesn't feel enough for her; with Barbara he feels too much, an almost uncouth sentimentality. He craves Barbara's status like a man drowning, but can't hold up under the weight of what it would mean. They have very strong intellectual chemistry, but socially they are a disaster of a couple, and yet nonetheless, Hornblower continues with the marriage because it feels to him like the thing he ought to do, just as he ought to become squire of Smallbridge. He's so viscerally uncomfortable with his position in the later books in a way he wasn't even at the height of his earlier miseries, but he refuses to let himself admit that his ambitions might have led him astray.

I think it's also interesting that the relationship which Hornblower arguably finds the most fulfilling (or rather, it was written very poorly if Forester wanted to make it feel fulfilling for the reader, but nonetheless it was clearly meant to be the most fulfilling for Hornblower) is his relationship with Marie, who sits at a similar odd juncture to him. In the text, Forester says outright that Marie fulfills Hornblower's interest in upper-class women (ambition) while not intimidating him, yet still being a satisfying intellectual partner. Nonetheless, just as Marie and Hornblower can never actually end up together, Hornblower can never actually be comfortable with his position, and no matter how many times he tries to find solace in her, he is eventually forced to continue down the path that he began, making up with Barbara and fully taking up the mantle of Admiral and Peer of the Realm.

In short, I think that watching the way in which Hornblower's relationship with Maria evolves over the course of the early books and the way in which his relationship with Barbara takes up after that ends up being a very neat parallel to his own ambitions and class identity. With Maria he is at home, but bored and restless; with Barbara he gets everything that he wants, but feels like a fish out of water. I think that particular parallel is part of the particular tragedy of Hornblower - he can't ever be satisfied with the person he was, or the person he's become. But I think that adding in aspects of extreme class difference - even more class difference than the general trends of social mobility during this period - also helps to elucidate the fundamental tension which drives Hornblower forward as a character. The world he came from was too small for him; the world in which he moves now is far too big; but there's no in-between option. He has to choose what he wants to be, and sacrifice some part of himself in order to do that, and in light of this reading of him, I think that there's a lot of interesting dilemmas to be raised.

#SORRY FOR WRITING AN ESSAY ABOUT THIS I DID NOT MEAN TO WRITE THIS MUCH #clearly i need to stick myself onto doing actual academic writing so i stop writing silly essays on Tumblr Dot Com #caveat number one: i am not at all a historian i'm sure historians of this period will find a million problems with this #which i'm not saying to be coy i'm saying it because i would LOVE to understand the period dynamics of class and mobility better #(also sorry for using the word class. i know that one's on thin ice during this period)#this is to say that you have free reign to infodump about whatever historical inaccuracies i've made as much as you want #PROVIDED THAT you leave citations/recommended readings because i want to eat that for breakfast <3 #i had already kind of arrived at the apothecary conclusion on my own as per irvine loudon's medical practice and the general practioner #(covers 1750-1850)#but it was not a comprehensive reading so i will have to go back and reread if i ever do anything based on that #also a lot of this class tension stuff forms the base for my bunting/hornblower fic/marxist daydream scenario #which is why i've been thinking about it too much. but we're not talking about that rn #ANYWAYS. caveat number two: i hate the way forester talks about all of the women in the books #and i hate the way parkinson talks about them even more #OBVIOUSLY they all have their own entire inner lives and also hornblower is World's Most Dishonest Narrator #so i don't trust basically anything that gets said about them #however i do think that from a literary analysis perspective (trying to make these books mean something lol)#the way in which forester specifically depicts them in the text does have something interesting to say about hornblower himself #and for the way that i personally read these books. which my interpretation is essentially the thesis of this post #that's why i personally consider them a tragedy (hornblower gives in to the hubris of his ambition)#but why you could also read them as positive (hornblower finds his place in the world against the odds)#the main issue i have with how people (at large not so much on here) often read them is that they read them in the second way #whereas i think that hornblower's fundamental flaw is that he cannot understand that ambition is what makes him miserable #and i think it would be more narratively satisfying of a positive ending if he overcame his desire for status somehow #(i do like them as a tragedy though i think they work well and are perfectly meaningful that way)#i just don't like taking them as the gospel i think you've got to grapple a little with the guy y'know. dilemma time #okay that's enough tag pontificating i'm going to run out of tag but here it is the hornblower thesis i'm going for a walk goodbye #perce rambles #percy yells at cecil scott #hornblower

Just remembered that Will sat on the icebox in the van for the 30 hr ride back to Hawkins

#byler #stranger things #that willelmike dynamic in the van after the monologue needs to be studied under a microscope #like why couldn’t we see the aftermath of his monologue???#what happened??#when will sat on the icebox did el and mike look confused??#did they offer to leave room for him to sit there but he declined politely like no that’s okay…#followed by the next 30 hrs of awkward #I know the vibes were OFF #that’s the reason they only let us be confronted with them by the time they arrived in Hawkins #they needed to shift the mood to confusion about Hawkins’ state #bc they could not reveal what the vibes were like before that #no but the prospects of el hugging all of them after saving max #and it’s like emotional and they’re all so relieved she’s alive #but then shortly after that when they’re planning going back to Hawkins #she’s distant again #maybe it’s with everyone so they just brush it off as her needing time to process everything #but it’s still suspicious because…#why are things with her and mike still feeling very off #and then that’s when they’re getting into the van and then will just adds to the awkwardness even more by sitting on the icebox 😭#I also noticed 2 pillows on the backseat so it’s likely that’s where byler slept in s4 during their shenanigans #so I’m guessing that where el and mike slept while Will slept on the floor 😭#no but seriously they could not show any of that without giving it all away #the angst and heartbreak and confusion and regret would have been so loud 😅

There is nothing so affirming and life saving as leaving home and being loved at face value by total strangers for who you are

#im losing track of the genuine interactions ive had since i arrived that have all just been #so loving in so many small ways #from so many people #who have no reason to be kind or loving or to return kindness when it is offered to them #and yet they return it and offer it with such genuine joy #these are the kind of things that will save your life. i truly believe that. almost moreso than the deep network of friends you build #that's important but it becomes an echo chamber if you don't step away #and remember that you exist outside of it and the world sees you for you and not what the people back home need you to be #want you to be expect you to be #and maybe even love you in entirely platonic little ways for it #i will expand more later i am attempting a minor digital cleanse while here. there will be a nola series next week once i have processed.#but oh. i just took the slightly longer route home so i could hit Frenchman in hopes of catching a second line #followed them till they looped back to chartres and made my way home #which is a room with a kitchenette and bath in a railroad just north of st claude. by the tracks.#the bars here are more scattered. neighbors dives where everyone knows everyone and their business.#and yet they've seen me going back and forth the last two nights and days and so. they greet me warmly. wish me safely home.#one auntie blesses me with her vodka soda as i pass before blessing the two men leaving the bar. everyone laughing.#ill remember iggys fondly even if i never step inside.#a block from home a gentleman on his porch singsongs a hullo to me. i do my best to parrot it back around the spliff i lit two blocks ago.#he asks to buy a cigarette off me. regretfully im smoking my last but i offer my vape if hes open to weed. its shameful and i crack a joke #something about kids these days but it seems easy. like neighbors chuckling at midnight passing smokes over porch railings.#we talked briefly as i showed him how to use the vape. about our dinners. the storm coming in. legalization.#he asked me if i needed anything in turn. the conversation was plenty i told him. which sounds cliche and someone will say this is fiction.#but it doesnt need to be fiction to be a story about a simple moment of connection and love. i could list a dozen stories like this here.

I'm thinking about an AU where like...Ody picks up a feral kid from an island who stows away on the ship. It'd be good to get some whimsy on that ship and maybe things go better. Hope Penelope doesn't mind an extra kid + Telemachus having a wild child of a little sibling now. Very overly enthusiastic, half the crew is terrified, other half is like "yeah the kid has good survival technique ideas." Ody is like, "please stop gleefully mopping the bloodied castle" after kid decides to be helpful. Proceeds to kick a suitors head out of the hallway so OdyPen can walk around together peacefully.

excuse you, that child is helping!!! Ody, Telemachus, and Penelope are reuniting and tired and this child, out of the goodness of their heart is cleaning the palace (with aid of course) 😤

they don’t need to bc by that point their an official ward of the palace, but it the thought that counts (they totally loot the suitor’s stuff in the process)
